Walks and outdoor activities

Kirkby Stephen is in the heart of the countryside with miles upon miles of footpaths and bridleways and thousands of acres of open access land.

Walking

There are recognised trails and walks of various lengths aimed at countryside, villages, culture and history. The Northern Viaducts Round follows over a mile of the former Stainmore Railway crossing the Merrygill and Podgill Viaducts and is accessible to wheelchairs and buggies. The line coincides in part with another walking route, the Poetry Path, along which 12 large stones inscribed with poems reflecting a year in the life of a hill farmer have been installed. Another section of the former Stainmore railway line can also be walked at Smardale Gill, about 3 miles from Kirkby Stephen. A number of walks have also been devised which make use of the Plusbus which serves villages surrounding Kirkby Stephen.

Ridingstonetrail riding photo

The Upper Eden area is also outstanding riding country with a good network of bridleways.  There are pony trekking and trail riding facilities available:

Stonetrail Horse Riding offers exclusive horse riding ranging from 1 hour to a full day. Situated at Ravenstonedale, midway between Sedbergh and Kirkby Stephen, we are fortunate to be surrounded by some of the best off road riding routes in the UK. We have easy treks for competent beginners and stunning trail rides for the more experienced. This is riding country at is best which we promise will leave a lasting impression.  We have a small team of well mannered, forward going horses and offer a high standard of personal attention to ensure a quality riding experience. Riding in small groups led by friendly BHS qualified staff, we ride in an open and relaxed order at a pace to suit you.  bespoke riding holidays or day treks can be arranged.  Own horses are most welcome and an experienced rider is available to guide you on some spectacular routes you may not otherwise discover.  On your return you can look forward to complimentary tea and cakes and a relaxing sit down in our riders' lounge. We also offer light lunches which are a great way to make your visit even more special. Non riding partners are most welcome to come along and use our facilities to enjoy a walk or just sit and enjoy the views.  We regret we are unable to accept children under 14 years of age or absolute beginners.  The minimum standard is an ability to mount and maintain good control whilst at walking pace and when halting. Most people who have been pony trekking a few times or who had had a couple of lessons should be able to meet this standard.
