Town Forum News and Events

The Town Forum is currently involved in various projects and events:

  • Calor Village of the Year  -  The Forum co-ordinated the Kirkby Stephen entry in the 2008 Calor Cumbria Village of the Year competition and Kirkby Stephen was awarded first place overall, also coming first in the Business section.
Kirkby Stephen then represented Cumbria in the 2009 Calor Village of the Year for England (Northern region) competition (a copy of our entry may be viewed at Kirkby Stephen Community and Council Centre).  Following a visit from the judges in March 2009, it was announced that Kirkby Stephen had won the North England competition, along with two regional category awards for Community and Business.
Kirkby Stephen then became one of five finalists in the national competition for Village of the Year for England, the judging for which took place in July 2009.  Shortly afterwards, it was revealed that Kirkby Stephen has been awarded the prestigious title of 2009 Calor Village of the Year for England.  To celebrate winning the prestigious title, there was a special celebration at the St Luke's Charter Fair including a presentation by Calor. Kirkby Stephen Town Forum and the Town Council have now appointed a committee which is looking at the suggestions received for spending the Calor prize money.

  • Walkers are Welcome - The new, national Walkers are Welcome (WaW) scheme encourages places which have something special to offer walkers to obtain accreditation for the facilities they provide.  In April 2009, Kirkby Stephen became the first town in Cumbria to be awarded Walkers are Welcome status.  Since October 2008, work has been undertaken to meet the WaW criteria, including obtaining support from local people and the Town Council, surveying local paths and establishing a new rights of way problem reporting system.  Further work will involve encouraging walkers to visit Kirkby Stephen and the beautiful surrounding countryside and promoting walking using public transport.  Kirkby Stephen Walkers are Welcome has its own website, www.walkeden.org, which contains a wealth of information about walking in the area and a Calendar of events including guided walks. Newsletters are also being produced regularly to update service providers with regard to developments in the promotion of the area as a walking destination.
  • Community Cinema - The Town Forum, Age Concern and Extended Services at the Grammar School introduce big screen cinema entertainment in the Grammar School Hall.  Occasional showings of a family film (tickets £4, from Age Concern shop, Rattan and Rush and Halls Newsagents.  Grammar School students may purchase tickets through the school).  Ice cream and popcorn.  Older people can access transport if required, please contact Age Concern Eden 01768 863618.

See the minutes of our meetings for more information.  We welcome volunteers and suggestions at any time, you don't have to come to meetings.
