August Events

1st to 14th August – Heritage of the Fells – ponies past, present and for the future – The Old Courthouse, Shap

artwork, photography, displays, workshops, talks about this special rare breed of pony.  Sat/Sun/Mon 10am to 5pm Tues/Wed/Thu/Fri 2 – 5pm.  FREE ADMISSION.

Artists – Alex Jakob-Whitworth, Jo van Kampen, Christine Longmire, Jo McGrath, Julia Mitchell, Kayleigh Richardson, Thora Talling, Juliet Whitworth, Deborah Windsor.  Most of the artwork on display plus a selection of prints and cards will be available for purchase.  There will also be a variety of books relating to Fell ponies and items provided by the Fell Pony Society for sale.

Photographers – Emma Campbell, Fleur Hallam, Brendan McGee, Patrick Neaves.  Winning entries from `Heritage of the Fells’ photo competition will be on display.

Talks – Tuesday 14th August – 7.30pm .  Illustrated Talk by Emma Campbell, equine photographer `Fells in Frame’.  Emma will talk about how she started out as an equestrian photographer, the Fell pony projects she has undertaken and share some top tips for taking photographs of horses and ponies.  Admission to all talks is free but please assist us by pre-registering.  Any donations to support the work of The Old Courthouse and other nominated charities would be appreciated.

Workshops – Thursday 9th August – Janni Howker Creative Writing`Connecting to the Landscape’ 1.30pm to 4.30pm, Cost £12. Maximum places 10.
Saturday 11th August Alex Jakob-Whitworth `Expressive Fell Ponies’ How to Give your Drawings and Paintings Life and Spirit 10am to 4pm.  Cost £50.  Maximum places 8.

Thursday 16th August – Dawdles Walk – At the Riverside Project.  Family Friendly Eden River Trail – The Cloisters, Market Square, Kirkby Stephen

Brings you the best local produce direct from the producer to the consumer.  Buy lamb, beef, pork, fish, poultry, eggs, bread, cheeses, cakes, photography, jewellery, textiles and much much more, from our regular stalls.

Tuesday 21st August – Eden Hearing Services Drop In Session – Kirkby Stephen Local Links

Eden Hearing Services hold a drop in clinic from 10.00am to 12 noon 3rd Tuesday of every month.  Services include advice on hearing aids and specialist equipment, hearing aids cleaned and retubed, batteries supplied.

10am to 12.30pm.  If you’d like advice on housing issues, getting the most out of your energy, money or benefits, why not come and speak to our adviser.  Sessions are on the 4th Wednesday each month.

10.30am.  We will take the route of the Kirkby Stephen Adventure Trail to Greenriggs Farm returning via Croglam Lane.  Children’s route map will be available with things to look out for and return your leisure, also downloadable http://www.walkeden.org/Things-to-do.aspx Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for the day.  All children under 18 must be accompanied.  Optional refreshments in Kirkby Stephen or bring a picnic for the end of the walk.  £1 suggested donation.

Thursday 30th August – Upper Eden Memory Club – The Friends Meeting House, High Street, Kirkby Stephen

10.30am to 12 noon.

We continue to meet alternate Thursdays at the Friends Meeting House (opposite the Spar Shop), where we enjoy fellowship over tea and coffee followed by guided activities and usually end with singing some favourite songs of old.

Thursday 30th August – Dawdles Walk – Hartley Circular – The Cloisters, Market Square, Kirkby Stephen

10.30am. One of our favourite walks, whatever the time of year, to the pretty village of Hartley.  We will detour up Kirkby Stephen Hill to the cairn and seat for those feeling adventurous.  Return via Gramsceugh and Frank’s Bridge for optional refreshments in the town.  Visitors always welcome. Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for the day.  £1 suggested donation.
