`Steam over Shap’ – August 2019

This summer marks the 175th anniversary of the commencement of construction of the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway which began with the cutting of the first sod on Shap Fell in July 1844.  Shap Summit standing at 916 feet above sea level is one of the most renowned points on the mainland rail network.  Several events are taking place in Shap to commemorate the coming of the railway which had a huge impact on the communities of Shap and Tebay.  For more information visit http://www.theoldcourthouse.org

An Exhibition of Railway Art and Photography at The Exhibit `A’Gallery, The Old Courthouse, Shap 10th August to 1st September.  Weekdays – Mon 10-2, Tues 2-5, Wed 12-2, Thu 2-5, Fri 2-5, Weekends – Sat 10-4, Sun 2-5.

Saturday 10th August 7.30pm `Steam over Shap’ – the story of the railway over Shap Fell talk by Jean Scott-Smith at the Old Courthouse, Shap.  Places limited.  Please book in advance.  Tickets: £3.  Doors open at 6.45pm to view exhibition.

Sunday 18th August – Model Railway Exhibition at Shap Memorial Hall.  Admission £3, 16’s and under free.  Layouts, static models, hands-on opportunities for children.

Monday 19th August – Talk by the South Lakeland Centre of the Stephenson Locomotive Soc featuring railway images taken by Percy Duff at the Old Courthouse, Shap.  Book in advance, price £3

Saturday 24th August – 2.30pm `Railway sites in Shap’ – a guided walk with Jean Scott-Smith.  Meet at the Old Courthouse, Shap.  Places limited,  Please book in advance.  Tickets £3.

Sunday 1st September 7.30pm .  Musical entertainment from Bill Lloyd, readings and poetry at the Old Courthouse, Shap.  Places limited.  Please book in advance.  Tickets £5.

Eden Hearing Services hold a drop in clinic from 10.00am to 12 noon 3rd Tuesday of every month.  Services include advice on hearing aids and specialist equipment, hearing aids cleaned and retubed, batteries supplied.
